When deciding on your internship, what did you want to experience and what did you hope to gain from that experience?

I hoped to gain an insight into the commercialisation of science and learn more about the business side of things.  As I am not intending on staying in academia I was hoping to gain experience and help me decide what career I would like to pursue in the future.  The placement has made me interested in pursuing a career in the commercialisation of science and has got me thinking about the important relationships between academia and industry.

Did you get the experience you were expecting and did you achieve the personal development you had hoped to make?

I did.  I had a great mentor who really tailored the work around what I thought would be useful.  She allowed me to lead some of the work myself which was great for my self confidence.  I was given an insight to the process of starting up a biotech company, the investment side of a business and market research.  All things I would not have done had I not done the placement.

Did you discover anything about yourself or make any achievements that you were not expecting?

I learnt I would be capable of holding up a job outside of academia.

Has the internship made you feel differently about potential career options and has it helped to put the skills from research into a broader context?

Yes. I think now I would definitely be interested in leaving academia and searching towards the commercialisation of science.  It has also made me think a lot more about the important relationship between academia and industry and the importance of having a multi disciplinary outlook.
